Dermaplaning 101

There are a lot of buzz words floating around right now when it comes to skin, body, and hair care – and as technology improves and new techniques enter the market, it can be hard to tell exactly what is being discussed. One such example is dermaplaning, which is a treatment that has exploded in popularity in recent years, and for good reason.

Dermaplaning is an exfoliation procedure that gently removes the outermost layer of dead skin and hair that accumulates over time. This is done with a 10-gauge scalpel, and the esthetician scrapes it across the desired areas of the body, collecting all the debris, until you are left with a smooth and bright new complexion! It takes around 30-45 minutes to complete, and includes not only an initial deep cleaning and the exfoliation, but also a restorative post-treatment and recommendations for further skin care.

You might be wondering how dermaplaning is different from a peel, and there’s one really big difference: it uses no acids or enzymes on your skin! All the exfoliation is done during the service itself, and you won’t have flaking or peeling in the days that follow – which means less downtime, a quicker recovery, and less time spent worrying about how the treated skin might look. And the best part? It’s painless, and feels similar to a close shave. A lot of people think that any removed hair will grow back thicker and darker, but this is just a common myth. The truth is, the hair is cut at the thickest part of the follicle and may, very briefly, be perceived as darker, but it is cosmetic only and hardly noticeable.

Dermaplaning is acceptable on all skin types, but should not be used on the skin of people with active breakouts or heavy facial hair, as it will not be as effective – that means waiting until acne is healed, or taking a razor to your beard! But other than that, feel free to come in to get the process done. It’s safe for pregnant and nursing women, as it’s chemical-free, and is generally good for sensitive skin or for people with allergies (but be sure to discuss any issues with your esthetician beforehand).

So why get dermaplaning done at all? Well, it improves the effectiveness of your current products, as it removes the top layer of cells that interfere with cleaning. It can help reduce acne, wrinkles, and scarring. It’s fast, easy, and allows your skin to replenish itself faster, without the weight of dead cells on the surface.
